Customer value before tech enthusiasm

It’s great to be enthusiastic about technology. But to actually help our customers, we should put more emphasis on being helpful – customer value comes before enthusiasm for your subject.

Even if that makes sales a little harder. Two very real things to keep in mind here:

1. Digital technology is doing amazing things. But over-promising is weakening its case in the long run. Deep Learning is a case in point. Some things work great with it, not all. And if you are not a big organization, it could be that training Deep Learning models sufficiently is out of your league.

2. Digital transformation is work – it’s doing, not just using different names. And here doing involves almost everybody, not just the IT people. The programmers’ work is useless, unless significant transformational work is also being done across the organization. The goal of such projects is not to have technology, but a better organization:

The result of digital transformation is to have a digitally empowered organization with processes adapted to leverage the digital technology to deliver the business goals.
